The Element of Surprise

Every ensemble I don needs to have an element of surprise; something unexpected. In this particular get up I was going for an unexpected color combo, baby blue with the coffee-and-cream colored trench. Different, no? I enjoy the sartorial element of surprise because people aren’t sure what to think of it (ie. No one has told them what to think of it…) and you kinda gotta sell them on the idea. This, of course, should be done subtly. Turn up your swagger, look people dead in the eyes, and give them that sparkling glare that says, “Look at me. I know what’s cool. I invent cool. And you’re looking at it, baby.” Problem solved.

K so I wore this get-up to work yesterday, though I obviously opted to keep my bra inside of my top for the office cuz, I dunno, I read somewhere that red bras peeping out of tops doesn’t happen in real offices…only pornos. After work I drove over to my Momma’s house, where Chelsea also happens to reside, for a lil photo shoot. Of course by the end of the day my outfit is already boring me to tears because I mean, I’ve been wearing it for a solid 6 hours. The red-bra is the oldest and easiest trick in my book, so I strategically folded the collar and ironed it down to stay…with a hair straightener. While it was on my body. VOILA- my ensemble is feeling fresh again! I waltzed downstairs and told Chelsea that I was ready for my close-up. “Brittany,” my Mom shouted, “You’re bra is hanging out!”

“I know Mom!” I told her, “It’s part of my outfit. I needed to add an element of surprise, like a pop of red. It’s my signature!”

“Well why don’t you wear that red hat I bought you instead of letting your boobs hang out like that?!” she inquired as Chelsea and I headed for the door. At 25 years old you’d think my Mom would be used to my left-of-center style choices…or at the very least she would have given up! But you know how Mom’s can be. To me, it’s an element of surprise and to a Mother, it’s an element of skanky whore-dom.

“BLAME RHIANNA, MOM!” I quipped back as Chels and I ran out the door.
